Andrew Goodwin’s theory of music video
Andrew Goodwins theory suggests that music videos illustrate, amplify or contradict the lyrics and music and within each genre each artist has their own iconography. Iconography is when a genre has their own music style or are seen as related to the genre. Each band or artist may develop their own star iconography which becomes their identity as a celebrity.
Voyeurism is when people spy on someone that is engaged in intimate situations such as undressing or sexual activity which is usually considered to be something which is private. This is very common within R&B videos such as:
50 Cent- Candy Shop
This music video has scenes where the audience would be viewing it voyeuristically for example the screen shot below is more personal meaning the audience are looking at it voyeuristically.
Snoop Dog- Sweat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ-_l1bHQ-k
Intertextuality is when a different form of media is seen within a music video. For example in Alien Ant Farms- Smooth criminal.Elements of Michael Jacksons videos and dance moves are seen throughout as it is a cover of his song.so this is a rpresnations where the elements of different music videos and artist are used answer and explored to being manipulated and used in a different way so therefore for them to be suberveted and reshaped.
The boy dancing in the video is shown to do one of Michaels signature moves which is featured throughout his videos.
This is shown in Michael Jacksons Smooth Criminal video which is the original version of this song and the audience would recognise the dance move.
Another example of intertextuality within music videos is in Lady Gaga.
